Faust is rightly regarded as a climax in German letters and,together with Don Quixote,The Divine Comedy, War and Peace and King Lear,in world literature. The nobility of its language, the sharpness of its mockery, the breadth of its subject matter and the beauty of its lyricism all make it unique. And all pose seemingly insuperable problems to the translator What should a translator do Try to convey meaning as literally as possible Reproduce rhyme and meter patterns as faithfully as possible Convey the spirit of the work more than its form and letters All of these are worthy objectives but they all are competing and, seemingly, mutually exclusive ones. It is a measure of Mr.Arndt's artistry that these conflicts seem to dissolve in his text. From the beautiful and melancholy Dedication that precedes Part I to the mystical and esoteric completion of Part II I was unable to find a single jarring note, even though I love the German text with some fanaticism. Mr. Arndt's (or are they the Editor's) generous explanatory footnotes are a mine of erudition and good sense. F. MooneyJarrell crafted a masterpiece with this one! Sadly, he didn't get to do part II. On the other hand, Robert Lowell's graceful and rhythmic rendition of Gretchen's "Spinning Song" nicely wrapped up Jarrell's work. So we should be glad we have a complete part I.The language is durably modern, by which I mean it transcends any one or two generations. If you have found other, more literal (but not necessarily more accurate in any important sense) translation difficult, give this a try. Jarrell never forgets that he need to be natural and readable. The lines will pull you on, to the finish.I've read this again and again over the past 25+ years, with never-ending enjoyment and an ever-growing appreciation for Goethe and Jarrell. This book should be better known!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Worth the price!By JacobFaust is regarded as one of the best works in German literature, for $11, it's worth the price.The only thing that brought it down from a 5 to a 4 is that the book was not in "perfect" condition, although that may have just been from the travel to my doorstep. No major damage, the book just looks like it's corners were rubbing against the inside of the package on it's way to my home, which made the corners look a little roughened and fuzzy instead of rigid and "pointy", nothing major, hardly noticeable, and "like new" condition. Great book for a great price, definitely recommend to anyone!See all 70 customer reviews...
