I can see how (why) Tolkien took some inspiration from this as he was creating the Middle Earth lore and stories. If you enjoy/love Tolkien's works I think you will appreciate and enjoy The House of the Wolfings. Its about Germanic tribes that live in a somewhat idealistic world (somewhat alternate history though thats not at all how this was written, thankfully) in which their Houses/tribes live wonderfully combined lifestyles of wild yet civilized in a great forest until the Romans come to conquer. There is battle, heroism, magic, romance, and just wonderful story telling. Its told/written in a way that is lacking in most modern literature-as if it is mythological history (its a nice escape to think it is..). Definitely recommend this for those that love grand epic stories, fantasy, historical ficiton, or just a great escape.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Should be required reading in English LiBy SGAWritten in a simpler time and laced with prime characters speaking in rhyme, this book is an excellent conduit for attuning readers to reading and understanding older styles of prose. I would recommend this book for students before diving into Faust, Dante's Inferno, or even Joseph Conrad. Which is not to say that either the story or writing style is in the same lofty category of any of those just mentioned, but for today's reader, this book is easier to understand and follow.
