HENDERSONSo right at the start our titular character launches into a mini-diatribe impugning the intelligence of the POV character (his assistant) because she wished him a good morning. This is almost immediately followed by him wishing her a happy birthday with much enthusiasm and getting excited about the importance of "liminal celebrations".Umm... so is he actually not smart enough to understand that salutations and well-wishing are themselves liminal celebrations as well To disparage something and then exalt it practically in the same breath does not bode well for this character. I was - to say the least - unimpressed.I did read on however, and it did get better from there. Although not by terribly much. This was my first introduction to the Jackaby character, and as it was a free offering I imagine it will be for others as well. As such, and since it is free, do go ahead and download it to see for yourself whether you can stomach a full dose of this character. It is short enough that you won't waste more than an afternoon at the worst, and you might turn out to like it. Personally, I'm not a fan. But unlike with most books that I give three stars or less, I can understand why those leaving a five-star review would do so.It's a character tale. Oh sure, there is a plot, and the story unfolds, and there's an interesting twist at the end, but the real impact of the story revolves around whether you find the character entertaining, and some people will. Jackaby is a buffoon. Along the lines of the "wise fool" archetype. He is arrogant and self-indulgent, and delights in belittling others. This makes him an unsympathetic protagonist, but that is an intentional thing as it allows the reader to feel superior and laugh at him in spite of his abstruse vocabulary and apparently magical gifts. It also seems he is occasionally inept and unobservant, as demonstrated in this story when he becomes stymied upon encountering an unlocked door and is unable to determine how to operate it. This adds to the amusement factor (although it doesn't add much).Don't get me wrong. It's well enough written (although there were a couple typos of the too/to variety). It just didn't really appeal to me. I enjoy humor that comes from bizarre situations, so some of this does appeal to me - as in the magical market with its relocating streets. But I don't particularly appreciate humor that comes at the expense of others, which is how most of this strikes me. I did like the twist of the ending though, quite clever.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Amazing story perfect for Jackaby fans waiting for the next book!By Zachary FlyeReview:Protagonist: Abigail Rook doesn't want a lot of pomp and circumstance for her birthday, but living with the eccentric R. F. Jackaby she should have guessed things would get crazy. I love the character of Abigail as I've mentioned in my review of Jackaby and she's just as great in this book. Because this is a novella there isn't all that much character development the her character, however there is just a touch toward the end which I really enjoyed. I also love her relationship with Jackaby, there's nothing romantic going on and I doubt she believes he thinks of her as much more than an employee, but you can tell that he cares for her and she cares for him.World-Building: I honestly didn't expect there to be that much world-building in this novella, and there wasn't a ton, but there was certainly more than I had anticipated. I'll be interested to see what details make it into future installments and whether certain characters we meet in this novella will make a reappearance as the series continues. There's no end to the delight that this novella brought, it's much less dark than Jackaby, but still has a real adventurous feel to it that the first book had. There is a mystery of sorts, involving the map this pair acquires, and I was surprised by the outcome.Predictability: I can honestly say that I was surprised by a great many things in this novella. There was a lot, especially toward the beginning that was very easy to predict, but as this adventure gets going there are great puzzles, riddles, and twists that revealed themselves along the way. While there was nothing too shocking or surprising about these twists they are still extremely enjoyable ones.Ending: So since this is a standalone story of sorts it wraps up rather nicely. There's a bit of a twist ending but nothing monumental. The very end doesn't foreshadow any new adventure or leave the reader at a cliffhanger. The end is where the sort of subtle message of this novella comes to light which I liked very much.Rating:I think if you loved the first book, you'll love this novella, it's free and includes a fantastic and at times hysterical adventure.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Absolutely DelightfulBy Barbara ElnessThis short story takes place between Jackaby and Beastly Bones and was absolutely delightful. Abigail Rook is hoping that her birthday will escape the notice of her employer, R.F. Jackaby, but he has decided to help her celebrate in a spectacular way. He takes her to a mystical market, where she notices a treasure map but declines it as a present. Of course Jackaby knows better and presents it to her. Using magical party crackers that teleport them to whatever destination they wish, they follow the map where hopefully they will reach its buried treasure conclusion. Of course, it’s an adventure, which is Jackaby’s objective, and that is the best gift ever for Abigail. I loved all of the different challenges the pair encounter, and of course, each of them has unique talents that aid in the quest. This is such a wonderfully fantastic world, I hope we get many more stories for Abigail and Jackaby.See all 55 customer reviews...
