I needed an extra text for a class, and this was a good fit.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.A very clear and broad overview of the AGN phenomenonBy Marc T. GenevaThis book covers all you always wanted to know about AGN. These fascinatingobjects are not only the most powerful persistent sources in the universe, butdisplay a huge variety of phenomena across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. To complicate further their study, their thermal and non-thermal emissionvaries in an extremely complex manner on all timescales from minutes to decades. The strength of this book is to cover all aspects of AGN physics - including theirhost galaxy environment and their evolution with cosmic time - with roughlyequal weight. The authors made a remarkable effort to search the literature andpresent in a very clear and understandable way the topics originally less familiarto them. The result is a very homogeneous book that is an excellent starting point fora student or a more senior scientist interested in the field. The AGN phenomenologyand the physical processes at work are so rich that this book will also serve amuch broader community. It can be used as a quick reference whenever one islooking for a simple description with just the main equations related to aparticular astrophysical process like synchrotron radiation, accretion disks, emission lines, etc.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Very complete and recent overview of the topicBy Pascal F.A very complete and recent overview of the topic, most welcomed since the previous textbooks on AGN (Krolik, Peterson, Camenzind, Saas Fee course, etc) were all published in the nineties. The book includes well written reviews of the theory needed (like radiative processes, black hole physics, accretion, cosmology, etc). The results based on data by the recent X and Gamma-ray missions (Chandra, XMM-Newton, Swift, Integral, etc) are discussed, as well as observations in the very high energy domain (TeV Cherenkov telescopes). A good selection of the most important and most recent publications is made (more than 700 references). Must be in the bookshelf of any astronomer working with AGN!See all 3 customer reviews...
