Ms. Ascher is obviously an extremely talented author with a flair for creating complex, well-rounded characters, the ability to draw the reader in emotionally and to write a dramatic story that could stand with any of the most popular crime titles and authors as well as with the best written romances. In fact, I honestly believe that this cast of characters and their experiences would make for an excellent TV drama!Janelle's and Nathan's romance is in no way one of those cookie-cutter friends to lovers stories. Although Nathan Harris has been in love with Janelle Morgan-Wagoner ever since they were in high school together, she is married to another man when their long-standing friendship becomes physical. Despite the love that Janelle feels for Nathan she ends their affair and makes an honest effort to rebuild her marriage, despite her husband's escalating addictions and abusive behavior. Now it's three years later and Janelle's recently deceased husband has opened more than one can of worms as he airs all of the family's dirty laundry in a good-bye video that he made sure aired on the local news. The secrets that Janelle and her sister Kelsey kept from the world, from the rest of their family and friends and even from each other will ultimately cast a pall of suspicion over them all as the cause of Richard Wagoner's death and the events leading up to it are investigated by Detective Nathan Harris's peers.All of these characters are real and flawed and the story itself is a raw and honest portrayal of an occasionally dysfunctional family. Indeed there are several descriptions of abuse, physical, emotional and psychological, perpetrated not only by Janelle's late husband but by her mother as well. The author does a truly amazing job of describing how these women internalized so many of their mother's warped views even as they secretly rebelled against them. These aspects of the story may be triggers for some more sensitive readers as well as the taboo of infidelity but I for one found this to be a truly excellent read. I would TEN STAR this series if I could. I do hope that this will not be the last I see of these characters. I definitely want to see good things happen for Kelsey and Patrick's friends Grayson and Veronica and for Nathan's brother Jackson as well. Nice ending and now I'm looking for book three.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.Includes spoilersBy PSusanLooking back on my review of the first book in this series, Whatever It Takes, many of my questions from the end of that book are answered in On The Line. However, the whys of the answers is not really answered. Perhaps Kathryn Ascher knows that life is like that sometimes.Questions I still have -I still do not understand why the toxic relationship between mother and daughters continued. At one point, the mother states that she does not need a reason to visit her grandchildren. But the truth of the matter is the grandmother had no right to say that. Janelle could have stopped her from visiting anytime she wished since she was the children’s legal guardian. Then there is George, he seemed clueless to his daughters’ abuse at the hand of his wife. How could he not know what she had been saying all these yearsShouldn’t the Detective Bonner have been charged instead of just fired He clearly tampered with the evidence.This soap opera sage is just as gripping even with the questions that I still have. The confusion and misconstrued actions of Janelle clearly show she needs therapy as much as her son does. In fact one of the most interesting parts is when Zach is with Andrew, the therapist. Most of all this story shows how victims often blames themselves and then make continued poor decisions based on those feelings.
