Coad"London’s Glory: The Lost Cases of Bryant May and the Peculiar Crimes Unit" is a collection of short stories about the elderly detectives Arthur Bryant and John May, beloved characters created by Christopher Fowler and featured in a series of novels that are all entertaining and enlightening, especially with respect to London and its history. I assume that these stories were previously published in magazines and such, but there is no publication information given here, which is a shame. What *is* included, however, is a delightful introduction in which Mr. Fowler discusses the reasons for enjoying mystery stories, and he also gives a brief background into the genesis of each of the eleven stories, which is particularly enjoyable for someone like me, a long-time reader who is very familiar with this series. Those introductions also should serve to whet the appetites of new readers, hopefully causing them to search out the novels! At the end of the book, we also get a brief synopsis of each of the novels, along with a very funny partial list of books (imaginary and real) on Arthur’s shelves, and an excerpt from "Bryant and May and the Burning Man," the most recent novel in the series. BlackwellChristopher Fowler has written several fun and interesting short stories involving Bryant and May. All the aspects of his books that I like so well, quirky and interesting facts of London history, engaging interactions between the characters, and unique situations are all here in abundance. This short story venue offers in addition to this an opportunity for very creative story and plot lines as well as personal reflections and a backstory by the author of how he came to write the stories. I hope to see more of these stories in the future. I had read only one of the stories previously which for .99 was okay with me. For Bryant and May fans I highly recommend this book, and for those new to Bryant and May this is a fine introduction.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Short Stories Of Unlikely Crimes Solved By Even Less Likely DetectivesBy Stephen MannI found the stories (all shorts in this collection) to be enjoyable, but I'm not champing at the bit to seek out the novels because the eponymous characters weren't *that* engaging for me.I was disappointed that May played a clueless Watson to Bryant's scruffy, grumpy Holmes. I was looking for more of a team feel to the characters and what I got was one character who seems to be there so the other can say "As you know blahblahblah" when required.Perhaps this was because the stories were too short for that, perhaps I missed what the author was actually doing with the stories (I often miss the point when authors get clever, since I have dilettante tastes and am seldom well enough read to appreciate whatever is being crafted under the surface). It would have been nice to see May be "the clever one" occasionally, just to relieve the unrelenting Watson-itis.I'm keeping the book in my library, for what that's worth.See all 71 customer reviews...
