This way they could fall in love or not it would be up to fate..but of course they would fall in love. I really liked that. Love cannot be forced it needs to be nurtured and given time to grow.Most girls want a fairy tale romance with a prince or duke at some point. I think we fail to consider what that really entails especially when time travel is involved. It was interesting to see Eliza try to adapt to her new surrounds. Anyone would be a bit of a fish out of water in her situation. It was definitely a bit of culture shock even though Eliza had read about the 1812 and did her research. Reading and experiencing are two very different things.At times Eliza’s insecurities did get a little on my nerves. Truth be told there were a lot of them and they happened often. But after thinking about it if I was in the same situation I’d be a little insecure with such a handsome duke around and not being a size 2. Not to mention she missed all the conveniences of home.Deveric was not infallible. He lost his first wife during childbirth and had vowed to never remarry. He fought tooth and nail not to follow his heart. It seemed almost irrational at time but he was really just that stubborn. He is a duke after all and a duke is always in control.The little treat of Austen at the end was nice. Left me wondering how close of a relationship Eliza ended up having with her. I know it’s fiction but it would be cool if they had been friends and if Eliza had some kind of influence on Austen’s writing. Be transported to that fantasy, that fantastical time of Regency...and feel a part of everything.By KarenSCORE! This one is definitely a keeper, and one I shall read again. I was hooked at page one, and could never looked away.I love Regency Romances, and while I have read very few time travel books, this one has beckoned me from my coffee table since I had gotten it. Having finished all the others I had been reading or wanting to read ahead of it, I started it. Wow! I couldn’t stop reading. It was as if Margaret Locke tore into many Regency Readers’ minds and went after the one wish we know we can never have – to time travel back to the Regency period and marry a Duke! And not just any duke…a handsome, loyal, and very alpha/willing to be a little beta…. duke!The premise is the kind of fairytale that some little girls grow up with. I did. The find that magic lamp that gives you a wish if you rub it, kind of fairytale. But this was a magic manuscript and not a lamp. And the magic was in the writing and not performed by a genie. The manuscript had been passed down through generations in a family…to a writer in 2012 whose best friend, Eliza James, was finished with trying to find love and wished fervently she could live in the Regency Era. Catherine, Cat to her friends, had discovered the magic of the manuscript when she started realizing that some of the men in books she written, had actually dated her! So she decided to gift a story of love written for her friend Eliza – with the man of her dreams - and send her friend to the life she wanted.It worked…at least on the pages I was so absorbed in reading. I mean, the woman found herself with a duke on January 1, 2012…a duke from 1812! One Deveric Mattersley, the fifth duke of Claremont.Cat quotes Shakespeare’s words in her gift book’s inscription – “the course of true love never did run smooth.” She tells Eliza that the manuscript leaves it to the two individuals in the pages to plot their own course together. The attraction will be there, but the happily ever after is really up to them. She just provides the setting and the opportunity. Can a simple gift of attraction be enough to set up a lifetime of happinessThe book lives up to my own fantasy of what life in Regency England would be like. The characters are richly developed. The story is amazing…complicated, yet simple. My emotions traveled everywhere with Eliza…feeling for her when she was sad, elated for her when she was happy, and wanting to hug her when things didn’t go as she hoped. Her failings became the reader’s failings…my failings. Totally absorbed.For me, this book deserves FIVE STARS. I loved it – every page kept me enthralled, intrigued, and wanting more. However, I cannot share more of it – except to say, my review barely scratches the surface of this wonderful story. If you have any desire to find out what Regency life could be like… read this book and be transported!Thank you Margaret Locke for this wonderful story. I have your next book right now. I often find them too predictable. But this story, that continues from A Man of Character, is anything but predictable. The main character Eliza was one of my favorites from the first book, so I was so excited to see her take center stage here. This book combined all the elements that made Locke's first book so great (realistic characters, lovable heroes, and a hint of magic) with a very well researched historical back drop. But where this book really shines is in the characters. Despite having a pretty large cast, everyone from the duke's sisters to his friends are fleshed out enough that you can see them having a whole book telling their story (hopefully we will get some of those stories soon!). So if you are a fan of Regency classics like Jane Austen but often find yourself wondering how a modern woman may have acted in such different times, definitely pick this book up today.
