Virtually all electronic systems have embedded processors. Usually when we discuss computer networks, we mean networks of computer systems. However, in this book, embedded systems networked together are described as cooperating embedded systems. After a brief introduction, the book has five major parts dealing with aspects of cooperating embedded systems. The fact that small embedded systems are cooperating and working toward a common objective implies that an underlying network exists to facilitate this. This is usually accomplished with the aid of wireless sensor networks (WSNs); hence, the title mentions both cooperating embedded systems and wireless sensor networks. Cooperating systems include a collection of sensors, actuators, and controllers that communicate with each other to achieve a common goal.Chapter 2 deals with many interesting applications. This chapter describes many different applications that use cooperating embedded processors. Some of the fascinating applications that have recently emerged are traffic-based systems employing global positioning systems (GPSs) and cellular capabilities. The concepts explained in the book are very interesting applications, and I think many of them will find a practical place in the foreseeable future. I have seen GPS systems employing some similar notions in the market today.Chapter 3 delves into algorithms that are used in cooperating embedded systems. Many algorithms, mathematical models, and several references are described in this chapter. Chapter 4 deals with vertical system functions like encryption and security, which are also important in designing cooperating embedded systems. Chapter 5 deals with system architecture and programming models, and is fascinating to read. It goes into programming constructs and operating system (OS) specifics, and touches on issues in popular embedded OSs, such as Windows Embedded, MontaVista Linux, Palm, and Symbian. Many real-time OSs like eCos and TinyOS are also dealt with. It is surprising that VxWorks is not covered, considering it is a popular real-time OS. Chapter 6 concludes the book.Overall, the book is a useful reference guide, providing a glimpse into various aspects of cooperating embedded systems.
