It's vividly written, suspenseful, darkly humorous, passionate and compassionate...and it's one of the most twisted and twisting love stories I've ever had the pleasure to read. And right when you think you have it pegged it digs deeper, with more and more layers. (It could be called "The Art of Peeling an Onion" as there are indeed so many layers and so much is startling as it is revealed to the reader.)Victoria Avilan is an exceptional writer. Her story moves fast, covering a lot of ground and a lot of emotions. And yet her attention to detail is extraordinary even at the fairly breathless pace that this story takes. Her attention to details, and vividness of dialogue is exceptional. And yet those details only add to the clip of her storytelling. It's like a great ride that goes by rather quickly but you remember every minute detail as you gorge yourself. (Like something like "The Haunted Mansion" ride at Disney World.) Avilan spends a great amount of time in her story describing art which is incredibly hard to do if you're standing there looking at a work of art on a wall. Imagine the skill it takes to create the canvas and the paintings that figure so importantly in the story here with mere words. And yet, I saw every painting. I smelled the oils and the drawing utensils. And I could hear the scratching of the sketching. That is how acutely she describes the art world. It comes to life on the page in ways that are astonishing.Ostensibly a story about revenge, or mourning the loss of the love of one's life, this book at first seems to be a character-driven thriller. And it's taut pacing and page-turning breathlessness of the first section could almost be a Elmore Leonard short. But then what you think is a revenge fantasy of sorts turns into something much deeper. Enemies are not all they appear to be, and motivations require a deeper look. The main character seems to be a woman scorned who is ready to unleash her hellish fury on the diva that stole her man, but that would be too easy and too Tarantino. Instead, Avilan is interested in the deceptions we tell ourselves about our lives and loves, and nothing is obvious ever in this world she's created.It also is intensely dark and mean in places, appropriately bitchy and catty as it does take place in the art world and in Hollywood no less. And it's also incredibly feminist. The main characters are all women, and they are all multi-faceted. It all but cries out to be turned into a movie, but with the amount of back story, detail and relishing of the set pieces here, it may very well lend itself better to a TV mini-series!I'm a writer and an artist so much of this book was really speaking to me, but if you've ever carried a torch, or felt spited by an ex, or let someone wonderful slip away, this book has all that and more for you. It's crackling fun and yet it brought a tear to my eye in the last 20 or so pages too. This is above all, a story of redemption, but the renewal of the characters here are not by huge actions or dramatic events, but mostly by delicate human touch, senses being aroused by everything from light to water to the color of paint, and simply connection and commonality. It's a beautiful page turner that is also something of an extended poem. And a love poem at that. I really enjoyed her style, and was drawn to the characters. A true reading pleasure and I can't wait for Ms. Avilan's next book!! I loved the characters, it was complex with lots of twists and turns.It could have been written without the massive amount of alcohol consumption.
