A group of three young men travel up a river in a remote jungle location and find some sort of tepui with a society consisting of only women. All the women are tall, strong, intelligent, and live in a communal setting of great harmony (and one assumes from the descriptions - vegetarianism) So - How can they have children Apparently, their last male member died off in a catastrophe two thousand years ago and since then the women have reproduced themselves through parthenogenesis. Enter our gauche young men into this “non-feminine” society… and have all kinds of problems adapting their minds to perfect women who “act like men”. Eventually they marry the first girls they saw, and are expelled because the most sexist-pig member of their party commits spousal rape (I’m assuming from the reactions). It was written in the style of those serialized pulp stories for boys, and it really doesn’t translate well to the modern reader, in my humble opinion. There were some really interesting parts about how the women of Herland practiced agriculture; their use of forestry, composting, crop rotation, natural predators, using the land more efficiently etc.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Unexpected, But Pleasant NonethelessBy WarpedTornadoWhen I ordered Gilman's Herland, I was expecting something a bit similar to Wells' The Time Machine or Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth, which is to say that I was expecting an adventure in exploration which, at the same time, manages to thoughtfully reflect on the nature of the human condition. What I got instead was an anthropological essay, of sorts.I am well-versed in Gilman's other writings. I have, as have many people who have attended high school, read The Yellow Wallpaper and, because of a course offered at University, I have read Gilman's attempt at the Crime Fiction genre, Unpunished. I found both of those pieces to be delightful, if at times very dark, reads. Herland is no such thing.Herland's premise is described well enough in the product description, so I won't rehash it. The idea of a feminist utopia is an intriguing one, and I was excited to experience just what that might entail. Unfortunately, rather than experience Herland through the eyes of the narrator - who is, in fact, a man - and his compatriots, the reader is subjected to a constant cultural analysis and the differences between "us" - the rest of the world - and "them" - the citizens of Herland. There are characters and a few snippets of drily witty humor but, for the most part, this book isn't a traditional novel with plot and character development.I did not regret reading this book. And, once I understood that what I was reading - an anthropological essay based on a fictional utopia - I enjoyed it. Put simply, if you're looking for a cultural analysis of a hypothetical society, you would undoubtedly enjoy this book. If you're looking for an adventure novel with plot, I suggest taking your search elsewhere.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.Decent Premise, Horrible ExecutionBy Kimber HaigIf you go into this thinking the author of "The Yellow Wallpaper" can't miss, you'll be wrong.
